To earn your Tailwheel endorsement you must be proficient at normal takeoffs and landings, crosswind take off and landings, wheel landings, and go arounds! See
The FAA has no requirement for a specific number of flight hours it takes to earn this endorsement because it is proficiency based. However, on average, it takes most pilots anywhere from 8 to 10 hours to complete an initial transition to tailwheel aircraft overall, and 5 to 10 hours to become proficient in a specific type of tailwheel aircraft.
The aircraft rate is 245 an hour plus a fuel surcharge and 85 an hour for ground. if your doing the accelerated course its a one time fee of 3000 for the 2 day course.
Well I could go on about flying into the backcountry or the nostalgia of flying these timeless classics or how the cool war birds are tailwheel or well you get the idea. In reality the best reason to get your tailwheel endorsement is that you desire to become a better and safer pilot. Tailwheel flying will teach you more about stick and rudder skills and help learn you the feel of the aircraft.
Yes, we do spin training for all who would like to understand what a spin is and how to use this fun maneuver!
Look at their qualifications and experiences, there general Attitude, and ask them lost of questions, and see if you like how they explain them, if you like what you’re seeing then look to see if their schedule will match you needs? And verify that they will be there through your training and not drop you as soon as the next best thing in their eyes goes by LOL! Make sure they use a syllabus to help you to know what to expect for each flight and have a plan for each flight. This will also help you to track your progress and know in general how you’re doing! And finally, if you are flying with and instructor but don’t seem to be progressing then its probably time to look for another instructor and maybe work with your instructor to find other options on who might be a better fit. In the End Instructors are service providers and if you’re not happy with the service and have talked to them about your pain points and its not getting better time to look for a new one!
